Job-shadowing Experience in the Hong Kong Observatory
We had an unforgettable job shadowing experience at the Hong Kong Observatory on 27th April 2011 with Dr. David Lam, Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory. During the visit, we went to several special rooms such as the Central Forecasting Office, the Weather Conference, the Earthquake Section, the Numerical weather prediction Integrated Computing Environment (also known as the ¡¥supercomputer¡¦) room and the lawn that collects data about underground temperature, rainfall and humidity. During the visit, we learnt that the weather forecaster has to discuss with other scientific officers about weather data before presenting it to the public. The meteorological map must be illustrated by hand, which is a very difficult task. This not only broadened our horizons, it enriched our knowledge about how the Hong Kong Observatory works. Dr. Lam also taught us the importance of having positive attitude, self-confidence and honesty at all times. It was a memorable experience to all of us.

Job-shadowing Experience in Noah's Ark

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Noah¡¦s Ark on 21st April 2011 for our job shadowing programme. There were four areas of specialties: Animal Keeper, Operation Assistant, Human Resource & Administrative Assistant and Research Helper, and the nine of us were happy that we had the chance to take part in all the areas.

During the visit, we learnt that being an operational assistant and HR & administrative assistant is not as easy as we thought, that it actually takes a lot of cooperation between different parties behind the scenes even though it seemed to be a straight forward task. As for being an animal keeper and research helper, we prepared food and cleaned the animals, we performed the health check for them and were shown the daily process of how animals are treated after the park closes every day. We were very grateful for this job shadowing experience.

Job-shadowing Programme @ Vivaki Media

On 9th February, 2011, we spent half a day visiting advertising company Vivaki Media, where we gained invaluable insights into the advertising industry, knowledge that we would not have so easily gained in the classroom. We were honoured to receive a talk from Mr Pushkar Sane, the Director of the Hong Kong office of Starcom MediaVest Group, who told us about the running of the company.

He gave us an absorbing insight into the strategic process of creating an advertisement ¡V not only is creativity an important ingredient, so is good communication between co-workers, as to well as with the client, to make things run smoothly. We learned that advertising is not only about art and design, but it also closely relates to the media and other aspects we had never thought of.
We also learned that advertising is a very busy and fast-moving industry, and advertising agencies have to keep up with trends to create eye-catching and effective advertisements. Mr Sane told us that while the industry might appear captivating and appealing, it also involved a lot of hard work.

Finally we were escorted by Tania, a member of the SPCS Alumni, on a tour of the office. Among the things we saw were various newspapers and magazines in which the company¡¦s advertisements have appeared. This experience has definitely enriched us and given us an appreciation of the advertising industry.

During 31st January to 9th February 2011, eight of our F6 students participated in a one-day job shadowing programme at Bee¡¦s Diamonds. Our mentor, Miss Rendy Ng, the executive manager of the company, gave us a tour of the facility and allocated each of us to the particular field that we were interested in, such as marketing, sales and legal. As we all know, diamonds are a girl¡¦s best friend. There was even a session of studying diamonds for our interests which was clearly the most entertaining part. We learnt briefly about the four Cs: carat weight, color, clarity, cut which determine the price of the diamond, as well as how to use different tools to examine a diamond.

This job shadowing experience did not only provided us with an opportunity to learn about the field of business, but also allowed us to obtain a clearer vision about our interests, which in turn will help in deciding our future studies and career preferences. It was definitely a fruitful and invaluable experience that all of us will treasure.
