Cleft Lip Mission 2018

On 16 July 2018, accompanied by Dr. Candy Chan and Ms. C. Po, five F.5 students (Sophia Chang from 5S, Charlotte So 5T, Alice Chang 5P, Natalie Chow 5A and Doris Fu 5A) attended the Medical Mission For Children (MMFC) Forum on Cleft Lip and Palate in the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, China. Students were able to observe the screening session where they had the opportunity to study the consultation process and raise relevant questions. They visited various facilities and special rooms in the hospital such as the pharmacy, simulating operating theatre and wards.
The MMFC team is composed of volunteer medical staff ENT surgeons, anesthetists, dentists and nurses from the US and HK, who collaborate with doctors from the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital. They aim at providing free consultation, surgical and post-operative treatment to underprivileged Chinese children who suffer from cleft lip and cleft palate.
The students found the experience rewarding, further affirming their passion to pursue their future careers in the medical field.

Journalism Education Workshop
|
On 7th July, 2018, six F.5 students participated in the Journalism Education Workshop for Secondary School Students organised by the Journalism Education Foundation and Education Bureau.
The day began with the visit to the TVB City where students learnt about television production and behind-the-scenes activities for various news programmes. Students had the opportunity to tour news studios, as well as visit various film locations for popular television shows. Two actors also shared their personal experiences in the field, giving valuable advice to students on the value of hard work and facing challenges. In the afternoon, the group attended an interesting lecture on the principles and ethics of journalism, learning fascinating facts about how audience perception can be shaped and manipulated through use of language and graphics. Students then applied their new knowledge to analyse news articles and identify the differences between each one.
Overall, the workshop was an educational experience through which students gained a deeper understanding of the world of media and journalism.

Visitors from the National Society of High School Scholars
|
On 23rd May 2018, we were honoured to have special guests from the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), Mr. Claes Nobel (co-founder of NSHSS), Mr. Marcus Nobel, Mr. James Lewis (President of NSHSS), Mrs. Lee Lewis and Ms. Emma Farr Rawlings at SPCS during their short visit to Hong Kong. NSHSS provides opportunities to its members to access scholarships, events, connections, internships, and career opportunities. Our guests were shown around the school by our Principal, Reverend Sister Margaret Wong, our Careers Team teachers, other teachers and four Form 5 students. Mr. Claes Nobel was especially impressed by our school's emphasis on ethics and environmental sustainability amid technological advancements. Our guests had the opportunity to experience firsthand our innovative efforts, including our singing robot and the VR equipment in the Classroom of the Future. At the end, Mr. Claes Nobel gave a short speech and presented the NSHSS medallions to Reverend Sister Margaret, Ms. S. Keung and Ms. S. Kim for our school's commitment to set up the NSHSS Hong Kong Chapter. We look forward to welcoming our guests at our school again after the Hong Kong Chapter has been set up at SPCS.

University of Manchester Admission Talk

On 13th April, 2018, we are honoured to host Dr Rachel Starkey and Ms Moyin Kowk from the University of Manchester to deliver an admission talk at our school.
Ms Li introduced the university to us in detail. From the various photos that were on her power-point presentation, not only were we able to get a tour of the campus, we also got a glimpse into the exciting student life at the university. Ms Li also described the wide variety of courses being offered by the university ranging from Engineering to Kinesiology. She stressed that the course choices were flexible and diverse which allowed the students to explore their passions and interests. It was interesting to know that University of Toronto offers various global opportunities, including exchange programmes and summer abroad programmes. This overview helped our students get a clearer picture of university life and different study options. Moreover, Ms Li also explained in detail the application process and entry requirements. She stressed that students should also do their own web research to find out more about the entry requirements and admission deadlines for different courses.
Dr. Starkey, a senior Clinical lecturer and Programme Director, Speech & Language Therapy, started her presentation with a brief introduction on Neurology and brain structure. She then explained to us some basic facts about speech and hearing problems and also described the role of speech therapists.
After Dr. Starkey¡¦s talk, Ms. Kwok, a senior international recruitment and development officer, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, introduced the university campus life. She emphasized the fact that the University of Manchester was well known for its Biology courses, such as Psychology, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The university focuses more on work experience than lectures, so students can easily make use of the practical skills learnt in their future careers. Moreover, Ms Kwok also explained in detail the entry admission criteria, exam scores requirements as well as quota for international students for some of the courses.
Finally, we were given a pack of cards as souvenir, which introduced various courses offered by the university. All students attending the presentation found the admissions talk to be very useful since the speakers gave us an insight into university courses as well as the future career pathway options.

Food Angel Service Report
|
On the 23rd February 2018, with the generous sponsorship by All Nippon Airways (ANA), 15 students and two teachers, Ms. C. Cheng and Ms. S. Keung, participated in the ¡¥Food Angel Food Rescue and Assistance Program¡¦ and volunteered in the Sham Shui Po Food Angel Kitchen to help prepare the meal boxes and serve hot meals to the elderly. With the mission of ¡¥Waste Not, Hunger Not, With Love¡¦, the program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry and prepares nutritious hot meals that will be distributed to serve the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. The program highlighted the serious issue of food waste in Hong Kong and the major obstacles in collecting a wide range of ingredients, especially in winter. Our students not only had the chance to help prepare raw vegetables and pack 500 meal boxes in the kitchen, but they even had the valuable opportunity to serve dinner to the elderly in the community centre. The program was definitely a rewarding and meaningful experience for our students!

University of Nottingham Admission Talk
|
On 25th January 2018, our school organized an admissions talk by two representatives from University of Nottingham ¡V Ms Emma Winter, International Relations Officer, Faculty of Registrars, and Ms. Amanda Avery, Associate Professor and Admissions tutor for the Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics Programme.
Ms Avery introduced to Paulinians the various Biosciences courses offered by the University, ranging from Biotechnology to Plant Science. This overview helped students understand the wide spectrum of prospective career choices available before them. Ms. Avery also explained at length the general admissions process and stressed upon the students the importance of being well prepared in their subject areas before applying for a particular degree. She emphasized the fact that students must do their research to know the entry requirements and be especially aware if an interview is required. They should also focus on polishing and enhancing their interpersonal skills and be passionate about the subject that they wish to study. Ms Avery highlighted the many opportunities provided by University, including the facility to study at their international campuses located in China and Malaysia.
This talk was truly informative, helping Paulinians get a clearer idea of their future study and career choices.

A Careers Quiz for Form 1 classes was held during form period on 24th October, 2017. Its aim was to promote awareness among students for career planning and encourage them to start thinking about their dream future. The winners of the Careers Quiz were as follows: Coco Chan of 1T - 2nd Runner-Up; Ava Chan of 1S - 1st Runner-Up and Jamie Wu of 1U - Champion.

Oct 24, 2017 ¡V Careers Talk
|
On 24th October 2017, we were honored to have Mr. Kenneth Au Yeung, the founder of Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre, as a guest speaker in our school. Mr Yeung delivered a talk on Physiotherapy to F3-F6 students who found it to be very informative and useful for their career planning.
In his presentation, Mr. Au Yeung explained the field of Physiotherapy and gave examples through case studies to illustrate his points. He also shared with the students the academic requirements and college admission details for studying Physiotherapy and its occupational pathways.
Paulinians enjoyed this informative talk very much and enthusiastically engaged in the sharing session. They gained a lot of new knowledge about this field and learnt what it takes to become a physiotherapist.

Oct 26 ¡V 27, 2017 - F.2 Careers Poster Design Competition
|
To stimulate the students' interest in future career options, a poster design competition was held for all Form 2 classes. This year, to give students the opportunity to explore a wider range of careers and jobs, students were asked to do research on certain unconventional occupations, like database administrators and paralegals. Each class had to submit at least 3 entries, which were then put on display during lunchtime on October 26th and 27th. Both students and teachers were asked to vote for the winners. Apart from encouraging students to think of their future prospects through a friendly competition, this event opened a whole new spectrum of career possibilities that students became aware of. The results of the Poster Design competition were as follows: Chloe Chung of 2T - 2nd Runner-Up; Emily Cheung of 2A - 1st Runner-Up and Ashley Chow of 2A ¡V Champion. There was also a lucky draw for students who participated in voting for the best poster. The three lucky draw winners were: Alyssa Lai from 2U, Victoria Ip from 4S and Jacqueline Chan from 5T.

JUPAS / NON-JUPAS Sharing Sessions
|
After school hours on four separate days, i.e., October 17th, 26th, 31st and November 3rd, sharing sessions on JUPAS/ Non-JUPAS college admissions and subject choices were held. Some SPCS graduates, who are currently Year 1/2 students at various local universities, were invited to share their JUPAS / NON-JUPAS subject choices with our Form 5 and Form 6 students. These university students spoke about their individual study programmes and life at university in general. All the participants found this sharing session to be very useful.

Forms 5 Careers Video Competition
|
During the Careers Week, a Careers Video Competition was also held for Form 5 classes. The students were required to produce a short film on the topic, ¡¥AI, Robotics and the Future of Jobs- Job Destruction or Job Creation?¡¦ The competition aimed to enhance the students¡¦ knowledge on Artificial Intelligence and explore its impact on future occupations. The videos were judged on the basis of their presentation, quality of information and creativity. Two videos were shortlisted by the Careers Team teachers and subsequently voting was held in Form 3 and 5 classes. The results of the Careers Video Competition were as follows: Form 5A as the First Runner-Up, gaining a total of 79 votes; Form 5P as the Champion, gaining a total of 285 votes.

Forms 3 and 4 Careers Essay Writing Competition
|
For Form 3 and Form 4 students, an essay writing competition was held on the topic, ¡¥AI, Robotics and, the Future of Jobs- Job Destruction or Job Creation?¡¦ Two essays were selected by English teachers for each of their respective F3 and F4 classes and these were then submitted to the Careers Team for the final voting. Through this competition, students were able to learn more about Artificial Intelligence and develop an understanding of its impact on future occupations. The results of the essay writing competition were as follows: Amongst Form 3 classes, Chloe Sit from 3U was the First Runner-Up, and Rachel Tan from 3P was the Champion. Amongst Form 4 classes, Annalise Tsang of 4P was awarded the First Runner-Up and Victoria Cheung of 4U was the Champion.

University of Exeter Admissions Talk
|
On 28th September 2017, our school organized a university admissions talk by Ms Lauren Hitchman, International Officer (East Asia), University of Exeter.
Ms Hitchman introduced to Paulinians the University of Exeter, detailing its background, location, facilities and the various courses offered. The overview helped students better understand the university culture and the subject choices offered. Ms. Hitchman also gave a detailed description of the admissions process and impressed upon the students the qualities of a good personal statement. A short briefing on the personal statement writing was also given. Ms Avery highlighted the many opportunities provided by University, including the facility to study at their international campuses located in China and Malaysia.
This talk was truly informative, aiding students in getting a clearer picture of the university study options.

University of Cambridge Admissions Talk at SPCS
|
On 15th September, 2017, Dr. Andrew Murray, Admissions Tutor of Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, and Miss Yanyan Yip, CEO of the WYNG Foundation came to visit SPCS. Dr. Murray shared with Paulinians and their parents information about the student life, finance and the admission requirements at this world-class institute, and he encouraged the Paulinians to apply for the university. Everyone found the talk very informative and gained more insight into the application process and the campus life at the University of Cambridge.
