University of the Arts London - Portfolio Seminar
|
A representative from the University of the Arts London, Professor Cath Johnson, delivered a seminar at our school on 27 February 2019 (Wednesday). She introduced the university, style of teaching and various arts and design programmes at her university to a group of F. 4 and F. 5 art students. She also taught our students on how to build a portfolio through research and various creative ideas and methods, which will be useful for university admission presentations. The students brought their sketchbooks and gave a presentation on their work. Professor Johnson was impressed by the standard of the work that the students had produced.
The University of the Arts London is a university in the UK specializing in art, design, fashion and the performing arts. It consists of six colleges including Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, the London College of Communication, the London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Taster Lecture by University of Birmingham
|
A University of Birmingham taster lecture was conducted in our school on 25 February 2019 (Monday). The speaker, Dr Carmel Mevorach, is a Lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience, Centre for Human Brain Health, School of Psychology from the University of Birmingham. The lecture is titled "What do patients with brain damage tell us about cognition in the healthy brain." Dr Mevorach shared his study on how cognitive ability was affected by brain damage. It was an interactive session involving interesting discussions which inspired our students on the wonders of neuroscience. Dr Mevorach also introduced the undergraduate programmes in the Department of Psychology and Human Neuroscience at the university which included a wide range of aspects covering child development, psychopharmacology and social psychology.

Food Angel Visit
|
On 1 February 2019, our students, Mrs C Cheng and Ms C Kwan participated in the ¡¥Food Angel Food Rescue and Assistance Program¡¦, sponsored by All Nippon Airways (ANA) along with. The students volunteered at the Sham Shui Po Food Angel Kitchen to prepare meal boxes for the elderly. The programme¡¦s aim is ¡¥Waste Not, Hunger Not, With Love¡¦. Volunteers collected edible surplus foods from different sectors of the food industry while the students prepared raw vegetables. Together they packed 800 meal boxes and Paulinians helped to serve dinner to the elderly in the community centre. The programme highlighted the importance of treasuring food and was definitely a rewarding and educational experience!

University of Birmingham admissions talk
|
On 30 October 2018, our school organized a university admissions talk by Ms Jessica Bowen, the representative of the University of Birmingham and recruiting staff of the university¡¦s law school.
Miss Bowen introduced courses that the university provides and talked about the university law school in detail. She described the learning styles that the university encourages students to adapt to, which are active learning and student participation. The university also provides chances for students to prepare for their career pathways, such as student debates, in which students can practice being a lawyer and understand the structures of courts. Self study and preparation for lectures or talks is highly recommended. Moreover, Miss Bowen stressed that the good learning environment at the university allows the students to have the best experience possible.
Students found this talk very useful and they have gained a clearer view of the entry requirements and a clearer idea of what they career pathways they would like to pursue in the future.

Careers talk ¡V Journalism
|
On 23 October 2018, our school organised a careers talk on journalism. We invited 3 alumni, including Ms Liz Yuen, who is the current producer of RTHK, Miss Keina Chiu, a member of The Pearl Report team, and also Miss Acacia Tsui, who is a news reporter for TVB Jade.
The three speakers started the sharing session with an engaging approach by questioning students the types of journalists and on what media their work would be displayed. They pointed out the challenges of this profession, explaining the nature of journalism and the preparation work needed. Through describing their experience, they showed their work was full of uncertainties because they never knew what was going to happen; and if there was an incident, they always had to arrive at the scene in the fastest way possible. Another point that the journalists stressed on, is the satisfaction they received when people were benefited because of their report.Towards the end of the session, the audience questioned the qualities a journalist should possess, the speakers suggested that the person must be willing to take up challenges and enjoy helping people by reporting facts.
The students and teachers enjoyed listening to the experience and personal advice from the journalists, helping them to learn more about journalism as a professional.

This year¡¦s Careers Week was held successfully from 22 to 26 October by the Careers and Further Studies Team. Many exciting activities and talks were organised to help students from all forms to learn more about different career prospects and higher education.

Oct 23 - F.1 Careers Quiz
|
The Form 1 Careers Quiz was held during form period on 23 October. The quiz consisted of 9 questions, with the first 8 questions on topics such as universities, occupations and the school's Careers Team. The last question of the quiz required Form 1 students to elaborate on their dream career, stating the reasons behind choosing that particular career and actions they would take to achieve their goals. The 2nd Runner-Up of the Careers Quiz is Cheri Cheng from 1S, 1st Runner-Up Isabelle Chan-Combrink from 1A and the Champion goes to Yurie Lam from 1A. Well done to all winners for their efforts!

Oct 22-23 - F.2 Careers Poster Design Competition
|
With the aim of increasing the students¡¦ understanding of different careers, the Careers Team held the Careers Poster Design Competition for all the Form 2 classes during Careers Week. Students were asked to design a poster to introduce a job, including the academic qualifications and skills required. Each class was required to hand in three poster entries, one of which should be from the class careers prefect. Three shortlisted posters were posted up during the Careers week for the whole school to vote on. The 2nd Runner-Up goes to Charlotte Suen from 2P, 1st Runner-Up goes to Veronica Lam from 2P and the Champion goes to Angela Lau from 2T. Moreover, a Lucky Draw was held for the students who voted and 3 students received the prizes. They are Rachel Choi from 5S, Jacqueline Lau from 5A and Olivia Poon from 5L.

F.3 Puzzle Design Competition
|
The Careers Team held a Puzzle Design Competition entitled ¡§The Person Who Changed The World¡¨ targeted at Form 3 students. Students were asked to design a puzzle to introduce a person who they think changed the world and write a description on how the person changed the world. Each class was required to submit an entry in a group of 3 to 5 students. The winners are Cecilia Kwok, Zita Ng and Katarina Shing from 3S.

Oct 26 - F.4 Careers Quiz
|
The Form 4 Careers Quiz was held during form period on 26 October. The quiz consisted of 25 multiple choice questions. These questions included the topics such as further studies, enrichment programs and the school¡¦s Careers Team. The 2nd Runner-Up of the Careers Quiz is Ariel Kwong from 4S, 1st Runner-Up is Amber Chan from 4P and the Champion goes to Natalie Wan from 4P. Well done to all winners for their efforts!

Oct 25 -26 - F.5 Careers Video Competition
|
The Careers Team organized a careers video competition on the topic ¡§Tertiary Education in Different Countries" for Form 5 students. Each class produced a 3-5 minute video to introduce tertiary education in a country of their preference. The videos were judged by their presentation and the relevant information shown. Three videos were shortlisted by Careers Team teachers and voting was held in Form 1 to 5 classes on 25 and 26 October. The 1st Runner-Up is 5L, which gained a total of 420 votes and the Champion goes to 5A, which received a total of 441 votes. Congratulations to all winning classes and thanks to everyone who voted!

Oct 25 Careers Talk - Journalist
|
On 25 October, Ms Liz Yuen, Ms Keina Chiu and Ms Acacia Tsui, our alumna, came back to SPCS and gave students an inspiring careers talk on journalism. Ms Yuen, Ms Chiu and Ms Tsui shared their experiences as producers and reporters. Through their sharing, students gained insights into the difference between communications and journalism, and careers path to be a professional journalist. They also shared with students the challenges they faced as producers and journalists, emphasizing success required perseverance in striving for your goals, and courage to take risks and the ability to recover after failures. During the Q and A session, Ms Yuen, Ms Chiu and Ms Tsui also gave useful suggestions on how students should make their subject choices and inspired students on how to pursue a positive working attitude. At the end of this careers talk, students gained a fresh perspective on how to pursue their passion.

HKUST Non-JUPAS Admissions Talks
|
On 15 October 2018, our school organised a HKUST talk for Form 6 students and their parents. We were very privileged to have Ms Jacky Yiu, the Manager of the Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions Office, as well as Professor Emily Nason, who is the Associate Dean of Business & Management delivering the talk for us.
Ms Yiu first offered us an introduction to the university before talking us through the direct-entry admissions more thoroughly. We became more familiar with the admissions process, and we were reminded of the importance of personal statements and meeting the necessary entry requirements. This was then followed by a more specific talk on the programs offered by the School of Business & Management, delivered by Professor Nason. We were fortunate to get a current student's perspective regarding one of the business degrees, the BBA in Global Business.
Finally, to better facilitate communication and to make the most out of the 2 periods, the hall was split into 2 groups so that parents could learn more about JUPAS admissions with Ms Yiu while Paulinians were free to chat with the university ambassadors to get a first-hand account of life at the university. Everyone was very appreciative of the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the various programmes offered by HKUST.

Sydney University Admission Talk
|
On 12th October, 2018, our school organized a university admission talk by Miss Sherrie Huan, Regional Manager for Hong Kong in the University of Sydney.
Miss Huan introduced the university in detail. From the videos and pictures in her power-point presentation, we were able to get a glimpse into the exciting school life at the university. Miss Huan also described the variety of courses that the university offered and some entry requirements. She highlighted the University of Sydney highly welcomed ¡¥international students¡¦ and offered a wide variety of global opportunities, including exchange programmes and job shadowing. Moreover, Miss Huan shared her experiences in Sydney and the local lifestyle that embodied work-life balance. Moreover, she stressed that a good learning environment was essential for the students¡¦ studies and growth. She encouraged students to research and find out more about the entry requirements and admission deadlines for different courses, as well as the ideal learning environment for ourselves.
The students and parents found the talk truly informative as it helped them to gain a better insight into the application processes and the various courses offered by the University of Sydney.

HKU Non-JUPAS and JUPAS Admissions Talks
|
On 4 October 2018, Careers Team organized two HKU admission talks - one on Non-JUPAS and the other one on JUPAS admissions for the current Form 6 students and parents. During the Non-JUPAS admission talk (1st session), Mr. Tsoi Ying Kim, Student Recruitment Counsellor, provided GCE students and parents with detailed information on the new arrangements for the 2019 Non-JUPAS admission cycle while Ms. Vanessa Li, Senior Programme Manager of Admissions and Academic Liaison Section, shared with DSE students and parents updates on JUPAS admissions during the JUPAS admission talk (2nd session), and gave advice to Paulinians on planning their pathway for future studies.
Besides, Professor Samson Tse, the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Undergraduate Education) and Dr. Ryan Au Yeung, Deputy Programme Director of BASc of the HKU, were also cordially invited to introduce the newly launched Bachelor of Arts and Sciences programmes to the audience.
Moreover, university ambassadors from different faculties (e.g. dentistry, speech and hearing, arts, engineering) held a short sharing session. They shared with our students and parents their experiences in university application, as well as their life as a university student.
Both parents and Paulinians have gained much insight in pursuing an academic pathway in HKU by being exposed to a plethora of possible choices for their future.
