Report on 2019-20 Careers Week (21 Oct ¡V 25 Oct 2019)

This year¡¦s Careers Week was held successfully from 21 to 25 October by the Careers and Further Studies Team.
Many exciting activities and talks were organised to help students from all forms to learn more about different career prospects and higher education.

Oct 22 - F.1 Careers Quiz
|
| The Form 1 Careers Quiz was held during form period on 22 October. The quiz consisted of 10 questions, with the first 8 multiple choice questions based on the video ¡§How to Find Your Passion¡¨, which was played before answering the quiz and topics about the school's Careers Team. The last 2 questions of the quiz required Form 1 students to reflect on whether they have used their time wisely for searching their passion and whether they will prioritize their passion while searching for their future job. There is a winner from each class, they include 1S Jasmine Ma, 1T Cherry Man, 1P Bettina Yeung, 1A Annika Suen, 1U Audrey Cheung and 1L Ariel Mo. Well done to all winners for their efforts!

Oct 22, 22, 24 - F.2 Careers Poster Design Competition
|
| With the aim of increasing the students¡¦ understanding of different careers, the Careers Team held the Careers Poster Design Competition for all the Form 2 classes during Careers Week. Students were asked to design a poster to introduce a job, including the academic qualifications and skills required. Each class was required to hand in three poster entries, one of which should be from the class careers prefect. Five shortlisted posters were posted up during the Careers week for the whole school to vote on. The 2nd Runner-Up goes to Cattleya Lai from 2T, 1st Runner-Up goes to Audrey Lam from 2P and the Champion goes to Sursharan Kaur from 2A. Moreover, a Lucky Draw was held for the students who voted and 3 students received the prizes. They are Chloris Ng from 5A, Sabrina Ng from 5U and Vanessa Chen from 2T.

F.3 Lyrics Writing Competition

| The Careers Team held a Lyrics Writing Competition with the theme ¡§Dream¡¨ targeted at Form 3 students. Students were asked to rewrite the lyrics of a chosen song of 1 minute with ideas related to careers aspirations, goals and plans. Students also needed to sing the lyrics out in the song and submit a word document of the lyrics. Each class was required to submit an entry in a group of 3 to 5 students. The 2nd Runner-Up goes to 3A, 1st Runner-Up goes to 3L and the Champion goes to 3P.

Oct 25 - F.4 Treasure Hunt
|
| The Form 4 Treasure Hunt was held during form period on 25 October. Students were given a quiz which the answers could be found in locations related to the Careers Team, such as the Careers Corner and 5th floor corridor where career activity related posters could be found.
The quiz consisted of 7 questions. These questions included the topics such as university admissions and careers related programs. There is also a task about conducting a survey to classmates about their dream jobs. The 2nd Runner-Up of the Treasure Hunt is 4L, 1st Runner-Up is 4T and the Champion goes to 4P. Well done to all winners for their efforts!

Oct 23 Careers Talk - CUHK Admission Talk

| On 23 October, representatives from the admission team of Chinese University of Hong Kong, along with Ms Denise Wong, our alumna, came to SPCS and gave students an inspiring careers talk on CUHK.
The sharing provided students with comprehensive view of CUHK, students gained insights into CUHK, including the provision of sophisticated facilities, flexible combination of curriculum in both double major and dual degree and various opportunities to study diversified programs abroad. Also, Ms Denise Wong, who is currently studying in medical faculty in CUHK, shared with students the joy and challenges she faced as a freshman, allowing students to develop an understanding of the extensiveness of university life. Through the talk, students got to know the criteria of getting into CUHK which not only encouraged them to strive hard in their studies, but also allowed students to give a thought to the direction of their careers pathway.
During the Q and A session, questions from the audience were answered about subject major and minors, transfer, residence on campus and Chinese language requirement. Students gained a fresh perspective on university life.

CUHK Admission Talk

As part of the Careers Week's programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered an admissions talk to F5 & F6 students and parents on 23 October 2019. Representatives from the admission team of CUHK and current students who are studying medicine and law gave us a thorough introduction about the prestigious university. Detailed information on both Jupas and non-Jupas admission requirements and application procedures were covered in two separate sessions held one after another. CUHK prided themselves on their top education quality, college system, abundance resources, general studies programme, internship and dual degree programme as well as strong support for students. Questions from the audience were answered about subject major and minors, transfer, residence on campus, Chinese language requirement and the ratio of non-Jupas and Jupas admission. It was a fruitful event for all who attended the seminar.

Careers talk for F.6 PAUL students
|
On 21 October 2019, Ms Rosa Cheng, representative from 'Youth E Start' of The Labour Department conducted a careers talk for F 6 PAUL students using a world renowned aptitude test called Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Students were asked to fill out the Keirsey and Bates Temperament Sorter to find out about their unique personality types. Based on a list of questions about various principal psychological functions, students would identify their preferences and characters. Questions include how they take in information and how they make decisions. Based on their answers, students were recommended a list of most suitable occupations according to their personality types. They found the exercise fun and useful as the results are highly accurate and reliable. The outcome, whether surprising or predictable to the students, can help them understand themselves better and in making decision on their subject choices.

Raffles International College - Career Talk "Success by Design"
|
Mr Stefan A.R. Orschel-Read, Academic Director and Programme Director at Raffles International College delivered an inspirational talk to our students on Saturday 12 October 2019. As a well-resourced and world renowned fashion designer who built his own fashion brand and designs costumes for Lady Gaga to wear for her shows, Stefan shared the story of his professional career with the students. He gave students useful tips for challenges in the art and design industry as well as covering topics on requirements to become a designer, industry insights, advises on career path and how to accelerate success in design. The Raffles International College's international campuses are located in Milan as well as Greater China including Hong Kong and offers programmes in Fashion, Fashion Marketing, Interior and Visual Communication Design.

Prince Philips Scholarship and Cambridge Information Seminar
|
On 13 September 2019, the Careers Team organized the Prince Philips Scholarship and Cambridge Information Seminar.
Dr Stuart Martin, Admissions tutor and Director of Studies at Magdalene College, the University of Cambridge gave an introduction to Form 4 to 6 Paulinians about the University, including admission details and requirements, finance, the college system, the renowned supervision sessions and the subjects that are offered at the world-class institute.
Dr Martin also mentioned a few items that candidates should highlight in the personal statement. Towards the end of the session, he addressed a few overseas candidates¡¦ concerns and some frequently asked questions.
The seminar was truly informative as it helped students gain more insights into the application process and campus life at the University of Cambridge.
