¡§World NGO Day 2023: A Glimpse into The Cataract Blindness Elimination Project¡¨ Event by The GX Foundation
|
On 22 February 2023, nine Form 5 students participated in ¡§A Glimpse into The Cataract Blindness Elimination Project¡¨ workshop organised by the GX foundation, a charitable NGO which aims to provide international medical and public health humanitarian assistance in the Belt and Road countries.
In the introductory speech delivered by Professor Emily Chan, CEO of GX Foundation and Assistant Dean of CUHK Faculty of Medicine (External Affairs), students were introduced to the humanitarian work by GX Foundation around the globe and the health disparities in cataract blindness treatment. Students also learnt about Mobile Eye Treatment Centres (METC), which are self-contained trucks for cataract surgery that have recently been launched by GX Foundation in Djibouti, East Africa and other regions to help eliminate the backlog in cataract surgery cases in developing countries.
Afterwards, students had the chance to interact with the medical team working in Djibouti, East Africa and were given a virtual tour of the hospital and METC grounds through Zoom. Through this interactive experience, our students gained special insights into the daily operations of medical teams working in humanitarian work. Afterwards, our students wrote words of encouragement for the medical team on a banner as a gift to the team in Djibouti. Students also met the staff from the Guangxi Ophthalmic Centre, and visited mini exhibitions by the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC).
This meaningful workshop was inspiring for our students as they got to see humanitarian work in action. They were moved by the GX Foundation team¡¦s passion towards helping others and learnt that humanitarian work is done through the collaboration of multiple groups from different backgrounds, rather than by medical staff alone.
