In the summer of 2024, Charlotte Kung of F.5U had the opportunity to embark on a transformative 2-week aviation journey in Sydney. From July 14th to July 28th, a pilot program provided an unparalleled educational experience in the world of aviation.
The program was hosted by the University of New South Wales in partnership with the Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council (DSSSC). Students and teachers were engaged in a carefully curated curriculum. Mornings were dedicated to lectures, teaching about aircraft and navigation. This comprehensive approach enabled students to rapidly gain the necessary knowledge about aviation.
Afternoons were devoted to hands-on learning, providing students with hands-on experiences to truly understand flight. Students got to fly a DA40 along with their instructors as a part of their training, followed by piloting a simulator. These experiential learning opportunities left a lasting impression.
To complement the academic components, the program included weekend excursions to some of Sydney’s most iconic destinations. Participants had the chance to explore the Sydney Opera House, the Queen Victoria Building, and to shop at the Glebe Markets. These excursions exposed the students to Sydney’s rich history and natural beauty and fostered a deeper appreciation for the country’s diverse cultural heritage.
By the end of the Future Pilot Training Program, the students achieved significant knowledge in aviation while developing a profound understanding of Australian culture. This transformative experience will not only expand their academic and cultural horizons but also cultivate lasting connections among the participants and with the local community.
