Theme of the year

School theme 2023-2024: 'Smart CITIES'

Our department can help our students to understand the school theme better through our daily teaching and science-related/ Biology-related extra-curricular activities.

Teaching:

  • Our department will continue offering the IGCSE, International A-Level, and HKDSE curricula to provide options for students with diverse plans for further studies. We will integrate relevant content and skills into the IGCSE curriculum to ensure a smooth transition to IAL or HKDSE in higher forms. Our goal is to prepare students to achieve excellent results in any of the aforementioned public examinations, which are vital for their future studies or careers in life science-related fields.

  • Through studying Biology, we aim for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of biological principles, foster respect for the living world, and cultivate responsible citizenship. In addition, we hope to increase students’ awareness in the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for both physical and mental well-being. When teaching topics related to non-infectious diseases, we will emphasize the negative correlation between activity level and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Students will be encouraged to read more books and articles online, and to discuss and evaluate the environmental, ethical, social and economic implications of relevant local and global issues. Studying topics like ecosystems, health, and biotechnology will enable students to understand the importance of safeguarding ecological security, nuclear security, and biosecurity, thereby fostering a sense of national identity.

  • We encourage teachers and students to use mobile technology in teaching and learning Biology. Online platforms will be employed to facilitate interaction between teachers and students. Students will be encouraged to use more educational apps and other internet resources as lesson preparation materials. We will also continue to employ the ELMO platform for continuous assessment and to facilitate students’ self-learning skills.

Extra-curricular activities:

  • To support the integration of STEM/STEAM, we will continue to integrate scientific investigations and project learning into our classroom teaching and support students who are interested to work on other off-lesson scientific projects. We will encourage our students to join local, national and international science project competitions so as to enhance their creativity and widen their horizons through interacting with the scientific community. Furthermore, we will motivate students to apply their inventions in daily life and showcase them at school functions or other exhibitions.

  • We will support various extra-curricular activities to nurture our students’ interest in biological and environmental related activities. We will continue to support activities held by the Science Society, and to provide guidance to activities organized by the Conservancy Club and the Horticulture Club like outings, keep classroom clean campaigns, recycling campaigns, one student one plant activity, etc. We hope to enhance students’ awareness in environmental conservation, as well as in sustaining and improving the school campus and the learning environment.
